Meet Kurt Alme Montana Native

Born and raised across the Treasure State, Kurt’s Montana history is rooted in the values of hard work, education, and community. His story begins in Great Falls in 1966, where his parents had established their roots as dedicated educators. His dad taught high school math and his mom was an elementary school teacher. As the son of educators, Kurt learned early on that opportunity begins with a quality education and a commitment to public service.

Kurt and his family moved around Montana frequently as they followed his dad’s career to Dillon, Victor, Helena, and Miles City. These experiences across the state gave him a unique perspective and a deep appreciation for Montana’s communities. Kurt graduated from Custer County District High School in Miles City where he was elected Governor of Boys State, Student Council President, and played football.

After graduating from high school, Kurt attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he was a Truman Scholar and was selected for the President’s Leadership Class. He graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Business. Kurt then went on to earn his J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School.

Kurt's Journey in Public Service

Kurt’s professional journey is defined by a deep commitment to public and community service, respect for the rule of law, and a proven track record of fiscal responsibility.
He returned home after earning his law degree to clerk for U. S. District Judge Charles Lovell. Kurt went on to be an associate and then partner at the Crowley Fleck law firm in Billings before transitioning back into public service as the Director of the Montana Department of Revenue under Governor Judy Martz. There he spearheaded the successful reduction of Montana’s top 11% income and capital gains tax rates. He then served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, prosecuting white-collar crime. He eventually became the First Assistant, managing the office under the U. S. Attorney.
In 2017, Kurt was nominated by President Trump and unanimously confirmed by the Senate to serve as U. S. Attorney for Montana. He led the office to focus on violent crime and related meth trafficking, as well as opioid diversion. When the President’s first term ended, Kurt served as the Budget Director for Governor Gianforte in his first session, working with the Republican legislature to substantially reduce Governor Bullock’s proposed budget and cut taxes. Following his second nomination by President Trump and confirmation as U.S. Attorney for Montana in 2025, Kurt led the office to a milestone of prosecuting more defendants than in any year over the past two decades.

Kurt’s commitment to Montana is rooted in an extensive history of both professional leadership and community service. He served as the Vice President and General Counsel, and later President, of the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch Foundation. In this role, he worked closely with the state’s ranching and farming communities to support the Ranch’s work with emotionally troubled youth.
His leadership in the non-profit sector eventually reached a national scale when he served as Executive Vice President for Planned Giving for the National Christian Foundation. As one of the largest charities in the U. S., the foundation has facilitated giving to over 90,000 churches and charities.

Deeply rooted in his community, Kurt spent decades volunteering on the boards of critical charitable organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club of Yellowstone County Endowment Foundation, St. John’s Lutheran Ministries and St. Vincent’s Healthcare. As a pro bono attorney for the Yellowstone Guardianship Council, he dedicated his legal expertise to protecting Montana’s most vulnerable citizens. Kurt’s extensive local engagement also includes active participation in the Billings Downtown Rotary and the Billings Area Chamber of Commerce.

Kurt’s investment in the next generation and love of sports also played a role in his desire to serve his community. He has served on the Board for Boulder/Arrowhead Little League and has spent many hours coaching youth baseball and basketball.

Kurt’s own family remains the cornerstone of his life. He met his wife Sandra in law school and the two have been married for 31 years. Together, they have raised two grown children.

Important Issues

There is no strife

It is for these reasons that I regard the decision last year to shift our efforts in space from low to high gear as among the most important decisions that will be made during my incumbency in the office of the Presidency.

I believe that space travel will one day become as common as airline travel is today. I’m convinced, however, that the true future of space travel does not lie with government agencies — NASA is still obsessed with the idea that the primary purpose of the space program is science — but real progress will come from private companies competing to provide the ultimate adventure ride, and NASA will receive the trickle-down benefits.
